Bakels Edible Oils has been part of New Zealand’s food manufacturing story for more than 40 years.
Our story began in 1983, supplying premium shortenings, oils and spreads into the New Zealand foodservice market. Foodservice is where it all started for us, and it remains an important part of who we are today.
From those early foundations, the business has grown its capability, its customer base and its role in the wider food industry. Today, our oils and fats support a broad range of applications, from bakery, dairy and foodservice to retail, special nutrition, industrial production and animal nutrition.
While many people may not know our name, they have likely experienced our ingredients. Bakels Edible Oils has supplied ingredients to some of New Zealand’s most progressive food businesses for more than 30 years, with our products used in everything from infant formula through to bakery products, personal care applications and everyday foods enjoyed by customers across New Zealand and beyond.
Today, Bakels Edible Oils is recognised as New Zealand’s only dedicated refiner of edible fats and oils. From our operations in Mount Maunganui and Timaru, we manage a diverse range of imported and locally sourced fats and oils, with capability across refining, bleaching, deodorising, blending, mixing, packing and exporting.
That capability matters. It allows us to develop custom-made solutions for specific oil and fat applications, support customer formulations, manage complex supply needs and help food businesses create products that perform consistently in real production environments.
As part of the global Bakels Group, we also bring the strength of international knowledge and a long history in bakery ingredients, innovation and application solutions. In New Zealand, the wider Bakels story dates back to 1947, giving us deep roots in local food manufacturing and access to global expertise.
But our story is not only about equipment, scale or technical capability. It is about people.
Many of our team have built years of experience in edible oils, fats, food manufacturing, quality, logistics and customer support.
