Bakels Edible Oils or BEO as it is known within the Bakels Group was originally a company known as Pacific Proteins which operated a small rendering plant attached to a meat cutting plant in Mount Maunganui. In an attempt to make the business more viable the owners of Pacific Proteins experimented with the refining of the tallow portion of the product produced during the rendering process and eventually constructed a small tallow refining plant. During the early 80's NZ Bakels obtained a shareholding in the business and expanded the product range to produce and manufacture both bulk and packaged frying compounds along with vegetable oil based products.
In 1992 NZ Bakels gained a full shareholding in Pacific Proteins and following extensive market investigation, the new company, Bakels Edible Oils (NZ) Ltd, was incorporated. In 1994 a new semi continuous refining plant was built. Subsequent expansions on our site included facilities for the manufacture of cake and pastry margarines, a fractionation plant for producing specialty fats, new bulk storage facilities and a new finished product warehouse.
Over the years BEO has grown and now has over 220 finished products and employs 90 dedicated staff.
